CHAPTER NINE

Most days I arrived at the antique shop before Uncle Jack to start my baking day. He usually followed a couple of hours after I was into my routine. I was trying all angles to rectify the relationship with Florence. I also hoped over time she would soften up. Since she had met Barney I noticed a few cracks in her hard exterior that showed a warm person underneath. I wondered what it was that made her so stoic most of the time.

I enjoyed the quiet of the shop, but there was nothing like Unkie’s infectious energy to perk me up. My order to Mocha Joe’s was already delivered and I was experimenting with a new adventure. My supplies arrived yesterday with several different cookie cutters in the shapes of more cats. The batch with the one like Gwinnie went over so well I decided to try making minis that looked like the kittens. The larger shapes had been a bit easier to maneuver the icing. Uncle Jack was likely in for several samples that didn’t turn out. The darker shade of icing was going to be more of a challenge than the gray. And the more intricate shapes a bigger challenge as well.

The door to the antique shop squeaked open. I glanced in that direction to see it was almost completely daylight. “Hi, darlin,” Uncle Jack greeted. He headed to the back of the store and started rummaging around some papers. He looked up at me with a huge grin.

“You came early to play with the train set,” I said.

Unkie giggled.

I walked over to the table behind the counter and picked up one of the pieces, looking at it from all angles. From my perspective, it just looked like a toy. “Do you know anything about these?” I asked.

Uncle Jack picked up another piece and joined me. “I’ve done a little research.” He pointed to a number underneath the cab of the train. “Each one is labeled.” He held the train out in front of him. “For example, the wheel configuration determines the type of locomotive. With steam locomotives, the front wheels guide the engine along the tracks. So 2-6-4 designates a locomotive with one axle and two wheels in front, six wheels on three axles that drive the locomotive, and four wheels on two axles that support the firebox.”

I stood back with my hands on my hips. Unkie had found a new passion thanks to Linda. I matched his grin, ear to ear. This new development couldn’t have made me happier.

He looked up and saw my expression. “What?”

“Are you going to be able to sell those? You seem pretty attached,” I said. I returned to the kitchen to start icing my cookies. I had made three more batches than I estimated I would need, just to have several to experiment.

He turned the train around in his hands. “There’s just something magical about these things. Maybe it’s thinking about being whisked away to another place,” he said quietly.

I lined up the mini cat cookies for my assembly line production.
